MARQUETARIANS
A few words from your President

Hi Folks,

Seems it was only a few weeks or so since being elected President, an honour to be proud of, and I’m pleased to be able to tell you that I now seem to have found a little more time for devoting to my Presidential duties.

Time has been and is always at a premium, but more so recently, especially with a close relative of mine being taken  extremely ill, being in intensive care for several months.

Naturally this has taken its own priorities on my available spare time and has obviously slowed down my progress with any of the non essential areas of my Presidential duties.

However you’ll be pleased to know that I’m now getting back up to speed, as is obviously evidenced by this report.

Our 2008 National Marquetry Exhibition, which will begin on Saturday 3rd May 2008, is this year being hosted by the Staffordshire Group.

The preparations for the exhibition are coming along very nicely, and, to judge by the feedback we are receiving from the Staffordshire host group, this will, once again, be yet another superb exhibition.

I'm happy to be able to report that every entry to the 2008 National Exhibition will be digitally photographed at a very high professional level resolution and quality, and the resulting compilation made available to our web site and the Marquetarian. This will enable every single entry to have the chance of being seen by all of you, our web site visitors.

The "Presidents Choice" gallery is being reintroduced this year, and this 2008 selection will be having a particularly poignant theme this year.

I will not pre-empt the final decision for my choice with this report, as I still have a little more time left in hand to refine my selection, but I can at least assure you that the theme of this gallery will be very special indeed.

Our Society has a fine Committee all committed to pressing forward in its endeavour to give members as much help as possible in solving your marquetry problems.

Sometimes it may take a bit of time to give an answer but an answer is usually found.  Use these experts, that’s what they are there for, to help.

It appears the slight drop in membership we experienced over the earlier few years seems to have bottomed out and has now most happily completely reversed that earlier situation, giving us the chance once again to bring this wonderful hobby to the public in all the ways open to us.

Exhibitions always bring pleasure to everyone. Especially for those who are for ever pushing marquetry to even greater heights.

Happy cutting.  Bye

Ernie Maxey, President

A message for 2007 from your Chairman

Peter White Chairman

Peter White
our Chairman from
June 2007

Having had the benefit of watching David Middleton take the chair for the last three years, I have taken note of how important it is to let business take its course with a minimum of interference. He only stepped in to get things back on track when absolutely necessary, as did Eddie Stevens and Pat Austin before him. I hope to emulate this approach and refrain from chipping in too often when Chairing committee meetings. Just don’t get me started, as they say.

There is a wealth of experience on the committee and I’m confident we will have a mature approach to dealing with issues as they arise. The challenges for the Society have always hinged around two basics. How do we keep our members happy with their lot and what can we do to gather more members into the fold.

We are largely driven by our constitution and the committee has always been mindful of its basic responsibilities. As far as I know, we have always been able to mount our annual exhibition and competition, and the quarterly publication of The Marquetarian magazine has never faltered.

With the added benefit of this remarkably well developed web site we can be proud of doing, not just what our constitution drives us to do, but to exceed it by miles. We now have a very long arm to reach out with and I’m sure this will help us gather in new members to the Society.

I can remember only too well, many, many years ago, the delight of discovering that the Society existed, at a time when I thought I was the only person in the universe interested in marquetry. There must be many like me who are yet to make the same discovery and at times I feel like going around shouting -  ‘don’t you know we’re here!’

Anyway, those of you who are interested in marquetry and have only just discovered this site, have a good browse around. There is so much here, I have no doubt that you will get caught up in the enthusiasm of the contributors and you will want to become one of us if you are not already.

Well done again Alan and the editorial team on your excellent development work. I’ll be back to the site again soon to see what else is new.

Peter White, Chairman
