Attractions near to the 2008 National Marquetry Exhibition
By Quentin Smith

With the National coming to Staffordshire in 2008 some of you may be considering an expedition into the Potteries and surrounding areas. Though some older maps may well describe the area as “Here be dragons”, in fact the locals are friendly and there are many interesting attractions within a reasonable range.

For those who like stately homes and gardens, the National Trust has quite a few properties in the area, including Biddulph Grange, Moseley Old Hall and the Shugborough Estate in Staffordshire, Attingham Park in Shropshire, Little Moreton Hall, Quarry Bank Mill and Tatton Park in Cheshire and Calke Abbey, Hardwicke Hall and Sudbury Hall in Derbyshire.

Keen gardeners are further served by the National Arboretum and National War Memorial at Airewas, Bridgemere Garden Centre, Trentham Gardens and Garden Centre, the Dorothy Clive Garden,
Fletcher’s Garden Centre, Johnson Hall Nursery, the National Sports Centre at Lilleshall and Hodnet Gardens.

Quite a few of the museums in the area understandably feature pottery, including Gladstone Pottery Museum (where the Exhibition is being held), the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Ceramica and the display areas at Wedgwood, Spode and Portmeirion.

Other museums include the Borough Museum & Art Gallery, Newcastle-under-Lyme and RAF Cosford, which includes the National Cold War Exhibition. Those with a love of history may well wish to visit Ironbridge Gorge or Boscobel House.

Those seeking real excitement can head for Alton Towers and steam fans will appreciate the Churnet Valley Railway and the Foxfield Railway, or the small gauge railways at Fletcher’s Garden Centre and Amerton Farm. Of course if you want to top up your veneer or tool supplies ready for your assault on the 2009 National you can visit Craft Supplies at their new premises in the Peak District or Kraft Kabin in Stoke.

Almost all these attractions have websites which can be found with a simple search, but if anyone requires any further information about the area please contact the Staffordshire Group Secretary, Quentin Smith (details can be found by clicking the Staffs Group web site link below).

We do hope you will visit the exhibition, and look forward to giving you a warm, Staffordshire welcome
