The 2021 International Marquetry Exhibition

The exhibition has now concluded and a gallery and slide show will be added to this website and will be timed to coincide with the first publication of the exhibits in The Marquetarian - that being the spring edition. Although a photo of the Rosebowl winning exhibit is featured on the front cover of the winter Marquetarian, this was not one of the official photos, it was one of the famed "Box Brownie" photos and was quickly made available so that you could see the exhibit which had attained our very top award..

Staying in touch & Regular Zoom meetings

You can still easily contact us via email at info@marquetry.org and we will endeavour to answer you within a day or so (quite often on the same day if we are not deluged with enquiries).

If you wish to phone you can find our numbers in the inner front cover listing in the current edition of The Marquetarian.

We are looking at setting up a virtual meeting platform using the ever popular ZOOM software (it is available as a free download) where we will hold a weekly online meeting for approx one hour on a regular day each week. This will be open to all Marquetry Society members to join in. It is hoped to temporarily replace group meetings and will keep our membership in touch with each other. Of course, Independent members are all invited to take part if they wish - they can then get a little of the flavour of the group situation - although if everyone speaks at once it could be a bit of a cacophony to say the least - but I'm sure we can arrange some sort of agenda to give everyone a chance to speak if they would like to do so.

At the moment we are indeed already running a rather informal regular weekly Zoom meeting but it is not yet decided how to carry on with these meetings once the covid restrictions have been lifted. We will bring you more information in The Marquetarian.

Our Zoom meetings have indeed proved to be very popular and we will be opening them up to all of our membership with the publication of our winter 2021 edition of The Marquetarian. Details of how to join will be published then. This new facility will prove to be very useful to our Independent members especially, as they will be able to include real time demonstrations of techniques, advice and suchlike - and all in a very informal atmosphere. All Marquetry Society members will be very welcome to join the meetings. You can just dip in and out of the meetings as best suits you, no restrictions there.

Keep checking here for the latest info - it will appear here first.

Latest & Breaking Information

We intend to bring you any breaking information regarding the Marquetry Society here. As things develop with the follow on from this coronavirus menace and any effects it has as regards the running and operation of the Marquetry Society you will find it here.

If any group secretary has announcements to make, they are welcome to submit them to info@marquetry.org and we will publish them here for your group members and other Marquetry Society members to read and appreciate.

2019 International Exhibition DVD

The 2019 International Marquetry Exhibition DVD is now available in high resolution video quality for you to purchase. The DVD is still at the old price of £10 - no price increases here!

If you want a momento of the exhibition your marquetry exhibit appeared in, you couldn't do better than do a re-run of the exhibition via this DVD. The print quality you will get from this disc is far better than you would get from copying your picture from this website. We have to limit the resolution to approx 500 to 600 pixels and a file size of roughly 50KB to allow for web visitors with slow internet connections - the photos on this disc however have no such restrictions. You will see all of the photos at full uncompressed file size quality - it certainly makes a great deal of difference!

The Ernie Maxey President's Commendation Award

As of today's date we are still waiting for you, our Marquetry Society members, to nominate a worthy contender for this new award. Perhaps you may have forgotten the theme or purpose of this award, so let us refresh your memory with a description of the Ernie Maxey President's Commendation Award:

‘The Ernie Maxey President's Commendation Award will recognise a member who has given exceptional service to the Society and its aims – whether that be by furthering marquetry methods, promoting marquetry to a wider audience, supporting the activities of the Society at national or local level or in some other way.  All members, and particularly Group officers, would be able to propose individuals to receive the award, with the recipient being selected by the current President from the list of nominees. Should the President be unavailable, the decision would be made by the Chairman’

We think the above description should give a good outline of the award, so if you have anyone you think worthy of such an award in mind, why not e-mail us with your nomination? We would be very pleased to hear from you. Do remember though that your nomination has to be in before the end of this summer period. Thanks.

Here is our e-mail address for your nominations: info@marquetry.org

Ben Bedford

Sad news reached me just before Christmas when I had a call from Paula Bedford to tell me that her husband Ben had recently died. In the absence of anybody else I can think of to write an obituary, I have done some research on his history in the Marquetry Society. Like many, I knew Ben mainly from his work in committee, but he also came to my local group on at least one occasion to demonstrate and lecture on the art of Tunbridge Ware. Within the Society he was almost a lone practitioner although he did inspire a few others to ‘have a dabble’. I had also judged competitions at his own West Kent group and on one memorable occasion was treated to a delightful meal prepared by one of his daughters after the event. During the after meal conversation we all put the world of marquetry to right of course. So I did get to know him quite well.

His dedication to the Society was marked by a lengthy stint as Chairman which ran from 1984 to 1992. He then took over as President, a post he held between 1992 and 1995. He was not a man afraid to express strong views, but the stimulus of his ideas always provoked healthy debate and he was happy to let democracy take its course. He played his part in shaping us into the organisation we currently are. When his own local group found it impossible to continue he became an Independent Member and, still wanting to do his bit, he became Independent Member’s Secretary from 2005 until 2011. Not many can show that many years dedicated service.

It was not just Ben’s skills with Tunbridge Ware that made him stand out, he was quite an expert in decorating spheres and other tricky curved objects with a mixture of marquetry and Tunbridge Ware. He made all his own groundwork. You will see other work in the Applied Classes where curved surfaces have been decorated but Ben made it his forte, and examples of his highly specialised work were first seen as long ago as the early 1980s.

As a knowledgeable marquetarian he was sought after as a judge at group and national level and, for outstanding services to marquetry, he was made a Fellow in 1995.

If anyone has other memories of Ben’s time at the West Kent Group or in The Society that they would like to share with us, then please write in to the editor.

Peter White,
Chairman

Ernie Ives

It is with great regret that we have to announce the untimely passing of our much respected and cherished former editor of the Marquetarian Ernie Ives.

Ernie’s passing was unexpected and sudden.

We send our condolences to his mother and two brothers and especially to the members of his Sproughton Group who we know will miss him greatly.

We will have a full tribute to, and remembrance of Ernie in the Summer issue of the Marquetarian.

To say that Ernie was a real character is putting things mildly; he was a wonderful fellow and a genuine English eccentric.

A unique man who will be terribly missed by all of us who knew him well.

A good and interesting conversationalist was our Ernie - he certainly knew his woods!

Ernie Ives

We would love to read about your memories of Ernie, especially if you ever happened to meet Ernie and you have an interesting or heart warming tale to tell about your encounter with Ernie.

Ernie was a fellow of many interests and his influence spread right across many arenas, so you may even have met him at one of his other activities.

Whatever your memories of Ernie, do please write in and let us hear your story. The good ones will be published in a forthcoming edition of the Marquetarian.

Send your Ernie stories in to: info@marquetry.org

Thank you.
