Marquetry in Iran

Marquetry is an art that has been practised for what seems almost like eons of time in Iran. Those artists and craftsmen have developed skills and visions which we can only describe as amazing.

Meet marquetry artist Gary Samdaliri. Gary's latest marquetry pictures feature Merlin and Thor, here they are below:

Gary offers us a very interesting viewpoint on a seemingly never ending
old marquetry chestnut:

Gary: "I see that old question of “is marquetry an art form or craft?” is raising its head again.

Well in Iran it is definitely seen as an art form, being sold in most galleries, unlike in the U.K., which I’ve noticed seems uncomfortable putting marquetry masterpieces alongside oil paintings.

Marquetry however is extremely popular as an art form in its own right in Iran."

We can only hope that U.K. galleries take notice and start to display
marquetry works alongside conventional art. That will be a
wonderful day when that eventually happens!
